Story
About this place
Tableland mill at Arriga started crushing on 28 June 1998, the first new sugar mill in Queensland in about seventy-five years. Bundaberg Sugar, then part of Tate & Lyle, built it, and Bundaberg Foundry Engineers designed and erected the plant, including a milling train made only of Bundaberg two-roll high-extraction mills. Mareeba–Dimbulah growers had been leaving tobacco and rice and were paying to truck cane to Mossman; the mill was the local works. Until 2013 it made syrup that was finished into raw sugar at other mills, rather than crystal on site. A bagasse power station now stands beside the mill. Built in the 1990s and upgraded with a biomass fired power station in the late 2010s.

South Johnstone Sugar Mill, 1930

Until the 2013 upgrade, Tableland made syrup that was trucked to South Johnstone to be crystallised; this was not true from 1998.
