Qld Place Names Register "Mount Mulligan"

Named after James Venture Mulligan (1837-1907) prospector. Refer R.L. Jack. Northmost Australia. Melbourne, 1922, Vol.2, p.429. Reportedly named by his colleagues on the prospecting and exploration expedition Mulligan led in 1874. The Djungan people first began living on the mountain about 40,000 years ago but stopped camping on the mountain about 600 years ago. In Kuku Djungan tradition Ngarrabullgan is an important Dreaming place, meaning "home of the being Eekoo". Ngarrabullgan contains the oldest known archaeological site in Queensland, one of the oldest in Australia (Ngarrabullgan Cave).
