Coal-dust explosion at the Mount Mulligan coal mine on 19 September 1921 killed all 75 men on shift, Queensland’s worst mining disaster.
At about 9:25 a.m. on 19 September 1921, a coal-dust explosion at the Mount Mulligan coal mine in Far North Queensland killed all 75 men on shift. The disaster led to a Royal Commission and changes to Queensland coal-mining safety law. The victims are buried at Mount Mulligan Cemetery. The mine later closed in 1957 and the town was abandoned in 1958. This is a respectful historical memorial record.
