Story

About this place

A little steam tram waits at the Port Douglas tram station, its short train of trucks stretched out behind it. A windmill pumps water for the engines, and timber sheds line the yard. The two-foot-gauge tramway opened in August 1900. The Douglas Divisional Board built it to link Port Douglas with the Mossman sugar mill. It carried passengers and cane, and bagged sugar went down to the wharf for shipping. In its first year the trams ran 5,807 miles and carried 23,062 passengers. The 1911 cyclone flattened the station's engine shed and stores shed. Passenger trams ran until 1935, and the last sugar came down the line in 1958. Location: Douglas Shire Tramway station, waterfront (now Anzac Park and Market Park), Wharf Street, Port Douglas QLD
