About this place
At Top Gate, Main Roads boards set out the timetable and one-way rule for the Cairns Range Road. The climb was too narrow for cars to pass, so drivers waited here or at Bottom Gate for their turn to travel. The road opened on 10 July 1926 and was officially named the Gillies Highway in March 1934, after William Gillies, former Premier of Queensland and member for Eacham. Location: Top Gate, upper end of the range climb on the Gillies Highway. Position is approximate.
