Story

About this place

Mossman Central Mill opened in 1897 at the northern tip of Queensland’s cane belt, crushing Douglas Shire farms against the rainforest escarpment. A 1920s State Library of Queensland photograph shows cane on the mill tram lines beside the works. Far Northern Milling later ran the plant; after voluntary administration in 2023 the mill closed in early 2024, ending more than a century of local crushing.
