About this place
Loudoun House was the home of John Moffat, the mining entrepreneur whose businesses dominated the Cairns hinterland from the early 1880s until the First World War. He helped found Irvinebank, Watsonville, Chillagoe, Mungana, Mount Garnet and Mount Molloy. Moffat built the Loudoun tin mill and smelter at Irvinebank and lived in the town from 1883, first in tents and then in this house, built around 1883–84. It is heritage-listed and now operates as the Loudoun House Museum.
