Story

About this place

Yampi Sound, in the Buccaneer Archipelago, was Western Australia’s iron-ore province before the Pilbara export ports. Japanese interest in the 1930s was blocked; BHP mined Cockatoo Island from 1951 and Koolan from the mid-1960s. This frame is the later seaward pit, benches dropping to the tide line. It is not the 1950s crushing plant — those SLWA photographs are HOLD.
