Story
About this place
From 1901 the Iron Knob Tramway carried Middleback hematite to the jetty at Hummock Hill, later Whyalla. By the mid-1930s BHP’s no. 6 was hauling trains of about 2,000 tons — among the heaviest in Australia — with the flat top of Iron Monarch still standing behind the wagons. This is the South Australian iron industry before the Pilbara export boom, and it is a railway picture as much as a mine picture.
