Story

About this place

Historical names: Dampier; Hamersley Iron; Parker Point; East Intercourse Island. Dampier was purpose-shaped as Hamersley Iron’s tidewater outlet: stockpiles, loaders, and ore carriers binding the Pilbara to Japanese and later global steel. A 1969 tourist photograph already shows an industrial port town rising on the Burrup coast; later panoramas and stockyard shots record the same function at larger scale. The port closes the geographic arc from contested gorge sightings to exported tonnes—and to the royalty stream that defined Hancock Prospecting’s fortune. Public access is limited to town, foreshore/lookouts and roads outside secure port gates; permission is required for controlled facilities. Dampier port panorama, November 2006. Industrial context only; secure port areas require permission.
