About this place
In 1934 the Cairns War Memorial still stood in the middle of the intersection of Abbott and Shields Streets. The clock tower memorial was unveiled there on Anzac Day 1926 and stayed in the heart of town until it was moved to the Esplanade in 1972. On the left of this view is the Imperial Hotel, with Shields Street running away past the verandahs and shopfronts toward the ranges. The photograph was taken by Thomas Francis Lyons and is held by the State Library of Queensland. Location: Intersection of Abbott and Shields Streets, Cairns. The memorial stood here from 1926 to 1972.
