Full description

Langley Frederick George (“Lang”) Hancock (1909–1992) was a Western Australian pastoralist, prospector and promoter of Pilbara iron ore. He was associated with Mulga Downs and later co-principal of Hancock Prospecting and, with Peter Wright, Hanwright. Hancock later described recognising the scale of Hamersley Range iron during a storm-forced low flight in November 1952; iron in the north-west was already known, and the discovery-flight account is contested. His undisputed contribution was publicising the deposits and campaigning against the Commonwealth export embargo. In 1963 Hanwright agreed a perpetual 2.5% royalty on ore mined by Hamersley Iron rather than owning the operating consortium. No portrait image is attached: no cleared portrait was supplied.
